Diversity
It is very important to promote a safe and healthy learning environment where every student is welcomed. Attending a diverse school district myself, I understand it is very important to fully understand each culture and most importantly, the students home lives. Taking every student into consideration in my lesson planning will help engage each student in the classroom. According to the IRIS teachers are cultually responsive when they: Acknowledge and respect different cultural heritages, teach students to understand and appreciate their own and others’ cultural heritages, recognize the strengths and contributions of individuals from historically underrepresented groups, activate students’ prior knowledge and connect what they know to what they are learningUse a wide variety of instructional techniques (e.g., role-playing exercises, storytelling) that align with the way in which the student is taught in his or her own culture, expand the traditional curriculum to ensure that diverse perspectives are embedded by incorporating multicultural knowledge, resources, and materials in all subjects.
Engaging each learner also includes being able to accommodate all types of learners. Learner diversity is key in order to have students learn from each other and grow as a community. Having diverse learners means that each student is allowed to be a teacher and with my help, have an opportunity to guide another student's learning process.
